SYPNOSIS

Agent 47 (Olyphant) has been educated to become a professional assassin for hire. His most powerful weapons are his nerve and a resolute pride in his work. 47 is both the last two digits of the barcode tattooed on the nape of his neck, and his only name. The hunter becomes the hunted when 47 gets caught up in a political takeover. Both Interpol and the Russian military chase the HITMAN across Eastern Europe as he tries to find out who set him up and why they’re trying to take him out of the game. But the greatest threat to 47’s survival may be the stirrings of his conscience and the unfamiliar emotions aroused in him by a beautiful, damaged girl.

MOVIE REVIEW

The best and most concise way to describe this movie is eye candy. I was anxiously anticipating this movie and after finally seeing it, it fell slightly short of what I was hoping for. I personally don’t mind eye candy cause, again, one of the main reasons to see a movie is to be entertained and eye candy can be entertaining so long as something in it has some substance. The substance in this case comes in the form of decent action, a not-so-bad storyline, and seeing Timothy Olyphant (Agent 47) in a role unlike any other I have ever seen him do. I had my doubts on the decision to cast him in the lead for this film, but he was sharp and pulled it off nicely. Granted, not nearly as good as when I had doubts about Christian Bale as Batman, or Daniel Craig as 007. We all know how that turned out. At certain moments he looked, acted, spoke, and even moved like a video game character. Not sure if that is good or bad, I guess it depends on if you’re familiar with and/or a fan of the game. This is not his best performance in a film, but it did broaden his repertoire.

Dougray Scott (Mike Whittier) delivers the only other performance worth mentioning. He plays an Interpol agent that has been trying to track down these mysterious hitmen for years, specifically 47. One of the pieces of eye candy, or least for me (sorry, I am a guy), comes in the form of Olga Kurylenko playing the role of very attractive Nika, a damsel in distress who gets all wrapped up in this conspiracy and thus in 47’s life. By the way, 47’s serious focus and good training is evident on how he deals with Nika’s seductive advances. It is almost disappointing.

Other eye candies include the gorgeous Audi that 47 drives, the weaponry, the sharp and sexy wardrobe, and even the movie poster itself is quite captivating. It does take more than eye candy to make a movie better than “ok”. I’m not familiar with the game so I don’t know if it does the game justice, but from what I see, I think it could have been better. I wanted more background on 47 and the agency’s connection with the Church. The movie opens with the timeless, spiritual musical piece, Ave Maria. Linking that to this story of super-professional hitmen gives a chilling effect. I wanted more of that and how/why the Church is behind this agency. Even though there are some flaws, not a bad job for Director Xavier Gens’ first major U.S. release.

During surgery, more than 60,000 people domestically each year experience "anesthetical awareness," a condition when anesthesia fails during surgery, leaving one completely conscious and feeling every incision, but paralyzed and incapable of doing anything about it. This is what happens to Clay.

'Awake' may not rouse sleepy week

Review by By Josh Friedman, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

With the only major release hitting theaters this week, the backers of the medical thriller "Awake" hope to catch the competition napping.

It's been six months since a wide release had a weekend to itself, when that friendly beast "Shrek the Third" frightened off any challengers.

But rival studios aren't lying awake at night over Weinstein Co.'s "Awake," starring Hayden Christensen as a patient whose failed anesthetic leaves him alert but paralyzed during open heart surgery and Jessica Alba as his troubled wife.

The movie opens today at 2,002 theaters in the U.S. and Canada and at best will be a distant second for the weekend behind Disney's "Enchanted," currently in theaters, but is more likely to end up in third or even fourth place, industry executives and analysts say.

What really spooks Hollywood executives is the light business films historically have scared up on the weekend after Thanksgiving -- often the low point of the fourth quarter.

"This is the worst weekend of the year for releasing movies, in my opinion," said David Tuckerman, New Line Cinema's president of domestic distribution. "Maybe everybody is exhausted from Thanksgiving or busy turning their attention to the Christmas season."

Tuckerman ought to know. A year ago, his studio's "The Nativity Story" opened to mixed reviews and failed to spark any box-office magic while two competing releases, "Turistas" and "National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj," fared even worse.

Two years ago, the science-fiction tale "Aeon Flux," starring Charlize Theron, flopped. Even the Tom Cruise epic "The Last Samurai," which opened to $24 million domestically during this weekend in 2003, was deemed a disappointment by the star's standards.

"Awake's" target demographic is female viewers under 25, the sweet spot for the horror-suspense genre in recent years. Weinstein's advertising shows off its handsome star, who played Anakin Skywalker in the latest "Star Wars" movies, and the romantic relationship between the Christensen and Alba characters.

The trailers and TV ads briskly set up the protagonist's horrifying predicament, the hook that is one of "Awake's" chief selling points. They note that 21 million Americans undergo general anesthesia every year, adding eerily, "One in 700 remain awake."

"Awake," however, is more a cautionary tale on the risk of getting one's medical information from movie marketers, said Christopher Bettin, a spokesman for the American Assn. of Nurse Anesthetists in Park Ridge, Ill.

Anesthetic awareness, as the condition is called, happens less frequently than the figure cited and is usually fleeting, Bettin said, "although that wouldn't make for a very long movie." He said the ads could prompt patients to become "unduly alarmed" about the danger.

Weinstein declined to comment, but the company -- never known for its understated marketing -- put out a news release a few weeks ago playing up the film's fear factor.

"This film will do to surgery what 'Jaws' did to swimming in the ocean," producer Joana Vicente proclaimed. It even included a medical disclaimer: " 'Awake' may not be suitable for those about to undergo anesthesia for surgery."

Leftovers usually top the charts on the post-Thanksgiving weekend, and that trend is likely to continue.

Although "Awake" is the only newcomer, multiplexes will be crammed with about a dozen major returning movies also vying for attention.

Disney's "Enchanted," one of five major films that opened the day before the holiday, will repeat as the No. 1 grossing title. With a modest second week drop-off, the musical fairy tale starring Amy Adams could take in $18 million in the U.S. and Canada, say insiders and analysts, for a projected total to date of about $72 million.

The R-rated "Awake," being distributed domestically by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., could vie for the No. 2 spot with two holdovers: Sony Pictures' African American comedy-drama "This Christmas," last weekend's surprise runner-up, and Paramount Pictures' animated epic "Beowulf," whose box office has been boosted by its expensive 3-D screenings.

The three movies are expected to rake in about $8 million each.

For the last spot in the top five, 20th Century Fox's thriller "Hitman," based on the video game, could nose out Warner Bros.' "Fred Claus" and DreamWorks Animation SKG's "Bee Movie" with about $6 million in ticket sales at the weekend box office.

The lack of new release competition should enable "Awake," which was made for less than $10 million, to eke out more business than it would have otherwise generated in today's crowded marketplace. Grosses for holdover titles typically fall by 50% a week.

"This gives us our best window of opportunity," said Clark Woods, president of domestic distribution at MGM. "Traditionally the box-office trend for the weekend is low-grossing, but that doesn't mean you can't do some business."

Specialty distributors, with an eye on the upcoming Oscars, will test the waters this weekend with a few limited releases, notably director Julian Schnabel's wrenching real-life drama "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" and Tamara Jenkins' dark comedy "The Savages," starring Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Fox Searchlight opened "The Savages" on Wednesday at four theaters in New York and Los Angeles, in a bid for a little breathing room of its own, said Steve Gilula, chief operating officer for the News Corp. unit.

As expected, critics have been kind to both "The Savages," the story of a brother and sister who come together to care for their ailing father, and Miramax's "The Diving Bell," about a French magazine editor whose life is altered when he suffers a stroke.

"Both films are getting attention, so it was strategically prudent to separate the two," Gilula said.

This Christmas Movie Review

This Christmas Movie Trailer

Genre: Drama

Starring: Chris Brown, Regina King, Delroy Lindo, Mekhi Phifer, Sharon Leal

Director: Preston A. Whitmore II

Producer: Joseph P. Genier, Leifur B. Dagfinnsson, Marvin Peart, Mike Elliott, Queen Latifah, Shakim Compere

Distributor: Screen Gems

Release Date: November 21, 2007

Writer: Preston A. Whitmore II

In director Preston A. Whitmore's This Christmas, an emotional whirlwind adult family dram-com, everybody has a secret, and we're not talking those presents under the tree. Combining the holiday spirit with less spiritual tendencies like girl fight sister rivalry, divorce, infidelity and in-the-closet interracial romance, Whitmore conceives of one middle class African American family's Christmas as a pressure cooker of unresolved resentments and enduring love.

It's that time of year when the Whitfield adult brood of grownup kids from around the country convenes at their LA childhood home still presided over by Ma Dear (Loretta Devine). While Ma Dear keeps up the sprawling Whitfield home and family dry cleaning business, compliant housewife Lisa (Regina King) is pressured by her conniving, unfaithful entrepreneur husband Malcolm (Laz Alonso) to persuade Ma during the homecoming to sell the business so that he can invest the money in his ambitious enterprises. When professional working sister Kelli (Sharon Leal) arrives, she sets about heaping contempt on Lisa for wasting her life as a virtual domestic servant to a man with domination and betrayal on his mind.

Ma has a few situations of her own too, including her secret live-in deacon boyfriend (Delroy Lindo), her difficulty cutting loose emotionally from a musician husband who abandoned her years ago because he was more in love with his sax, and two sons who hide their own musical ambitions because of mom's fear that they'll turn out like their less than devoted father. Meanwhile, Claude (Columbus Short) has gone AWOL from the Marines to make it home for Christmas, but he's left his white girlfriend stashed away at a hotel in town since he's too embarrassed to let on to the family that she exists. Oh, and Kelli who 'd rather spend her time with her work and that vibrator hidden away in the drawer, has caught the eye of a local LA fireman (Mekhi Phifer) who just may get her thinking otherwise.

There's lots more to these convoluted family machinations, much of it contrived, but the intended audience eavesdropping is rarely dull. The many pleasures of spending time with this variously distressed clan is that there's no dilemma, however worrisome, that can't be substantially overcome by the bountiful affection surrounding everyone and drawing them all in. This is a holiday film in the best sense of the word, a bouyant, jazzed up Christmas where for a change human flaws and feelings upstage gadget love.

A boy and a girl for J.Lo and Marc Anthony?

With Jennifer Lopez's belly expanding faster than a Jiffy Pop factory on fire, burblings are growing louder that she may have two Marc Anthony-spawned buns baking in her oven.

On the heels of People's report last week that J.Lo was recently seen "shopping for two" and a recent OK! item that she's "over the moon" about a double delivery comes a more detailed intrauterine dispatch from E!'s Marc Malkin, who hears she's "definitely" expecting twins -- a boy and a girl.

Lopez confirmed her bulgingly obvious great expectations during her final tour stop with Anthony on Wednesday night in Miami, telling the crowd, "Marc and I are expecting."

The less-than-earth-shattering announcement garnered many screams from the excited crowd and a kiss on the stomach from her beaming hubby.

So, why did Jen wait so long to make the blatant baby news official?

She told the crowd she didn't want to "burden" fans, who would perhaps worry about her high-energy dance moves during the show (you'll recall that she stumbled and nearly face-planted onstage last month).

Mr. Bean's Holiday Movie Download & Review

The idea of Mr. Bean -- the simpering, near-silent king of the British twits -- always seems a bit funnier than the reality. That's especially true with "Mr. Bean's Holiday," the character's second big-screen adventure, with Rowan Atkinson exuberantly goofing his way through sight gags that are cute and clever but not terribly amusing.
Here and there, "Mr. Bean's Holiday" elicits some real laughs, particularly toward the end, as the mayhem the character causes reaches epic heights. Mostly, though, the movie is a just pleasant-enough trifle, a collection of amiable sketches strung together along Bean's pratfall-filled road trip from rainy London to the sunny beaches of the French Riviera.
Seventeen years after Bean debuted on British television, lanky, rubbery Atkinson still inhabits him with such imbecilic effervescence that it's not hard to get caught up in his misadventures even when they're not very interesting.
Atkinson has cited French filmmaker Jacques Tati's Monsieur Hulot as an inspiration for Bean, and the new movie plays like a lowbrow homage to that character's first appearance in "Monsieur Hulot's Holiday."
After a brief prologue in which Bean wins a raffle whose grand prize is a trip to Cannes and a digital video camera, our lovable cretin is off to France, recording his journey every step of the way. Bean's video travelogue is woven throughout the story line and becomes a key device during the movie's finale at the Cannes Film Festival.
Continually sidetracked by his own fathomless stupidity, Bean causes perpetual agony for himself and almost everyone he encounters, among them self-adoring filmmaker Carson Clay (Willem Dafoe), who is on his way to Cannes for the premiere of his pretentious new film.
Boarding a train in Paris, Bean manages to separate a Russian filmmaker (Karel Roden) from his young son Stepan (Max Baldry). Bean and Stepan wind up as traveling companions as our hero tries to reunite the boy with his father, eventually hooking up with an aspiring actress (Emma de Caunes) who's on her way to Cannes, as well.
French star Jean Rochefort pops up in a strangely insubstantial bit part as a waiter who serves up a seafood platter, prompting a stomach-churning scene in which Bean tries to make his way through a slimy lunch of oysters and prawns.
Director Steve Bendelack and screenwriters Hamish McColl and Robin Driscoll never quite hit on anything inspired, though they pile on enough absurd stunts and buffoonery to keep "Mr. Bean's Holiday" from ever becoming tedious. Some gags run on too long, and only a handful elicit visceral laughter, though.
Baldry and de Caunes are suitably sweet in roles that call for little else, while Dafoe serves his purpose well in essentially a one-note part as an egomaniac.
The entire movie hangs on Atkinson, with the other characters there mainly for Bean to crash into. Really just a large, helpless boy in tweed, Bean utters only a few syllables -- the occasional "oui," "gracias" or "Cannes" -- as he moves through the world with reckless single-mindedness.
It's a testament to Atkinson's gift for physical comedy and cartoonish expression that audiences can stick with an almost wordless simpleton for the space of a full movie. While "Mr. Bean's Holiday" is hardly a memorable vacation, Atkinson proves an agreeably silly tour guide.
